About the event

"The World Rare Disease Day 2018 Symposium with the theme of “From Policy to Daily Living: A Wide Angle on Rare Disease” is co-organised by Hong Kong Alliance for Rare Diseases (HKARD) and School of Bio medical Sciences, LKS Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong.

Dr Chui Tak Yi, JP, Under Secretary for Food and Health, and Legislative Council Members Hon. Fernando Cheung and Hon. Elizabeth Quat have kindly consented to officiate at the opening ceremony of the symposium.

In the morning session, Dr. Durhane Wong-Rieger, Chairperson, Rare Disease International, and Mr. KP Tsang, Chairperson of HKARD, will give an overview on policies on rare diseases in developed and developing countries, and present Hong Kong patients’expectations to domestic policies. Dr. Brian Chung, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, will present the challenges and opportunities for Innovations of Orphan Drugs. Prof Po-Chang Lee, Director General, National Health Insurance Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan, will share the Payment Policies on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs under Taiwan’s NHI.

From the daily living perspective, we will invite social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist from rehabilitation service organizations to share updated information about financial aid and caring tips for RD patient in daily living." - Hong Kong Alliance for Rare Diseases
